Join Catherine and Ian discuss the ideas behind the conceptualisation, creation and interpretation of The Taken Path. How did these ideas change over the 12 months of recording their traverses of the path and its surroundings at Carrick Hill? What did they notice? What did they miss? How well does the available technology encompass their experience as observers? How much of that experience can be conveyed to viewers of the resulting videos?
“Together we’ve learnt a great deal about vision during this project, all the while focusing on a compelling set of rules that set our gaze front and centre. Our awareness of the periphery has taught us surprising lessons. For it is, in fact, what lay outside the plan, the places where the questions continue to pull and tug, that holds the most fertile ground: the fleeting, darting, unfocussed blurs. We are colourblind at the edges until we change direction.”
