Carrick Hill is governed by Carrick Hill Trust. The Trust Board determines policy and, together with senior staff, sets the strategic direction.
The Carrick Hill Trust oversees the management of the whole site, with the Trustees acting as guardians of the public interest
The Board decides on resource allocations, it represents Carrick Hill externally, and monitors the organisation’s performance against agreed objectives.
As a charity, Carrick Hill sets down guidelines for what is expected in Trust Board Member’s conduct. The functions of the Trust are:
(a) to administer, develop and maintain Carrick Hill for any one or more of the
following purposes:
(i) as a gallery for the display of works of art;
(ii) as a museum;
(iii) as a botanical garden.
(b) to promote and encourage the interest of the public in Carrick Hill, its collections and the services and amenities provided by the Trust; and
(c) to perform any other functions assigned to the Trust by this Act or the Minister.
The Trust ensures that Carrick Hill complies with its governing document, and any other relevant legislation or regulations. The Trust appoints the Director and monitors his/her performance.In addition to the above statutory duties, each Trust member should use the specific skills, knowledge or experience they have to help the Board reach sound decisions. This may involve: scrutinising Board papers; leading, or participating on, sub-committees; leading discussions at Board meetings; focusing on key issues; providing guidance on new initiatives; or other issues in which the Board member has special expertise.

Scott Bryant (Llb,BEc, GDLP) is an experienced professional / director with over 30 years’ experience in Big 4 professional services firms including as Managing Partner and in leadership roles both in Australia and internationally. In addition to experience advising a wide range of not-for-profit, Government and Commercial organisations (multiple industries and segments), since stepping back from full-time professional services, Scott currently serves as a Director/ Chair with not-for-profit (Kudos services, Lawguard Management) and commercial boards (Kay Brothers Wines, bWellness).
One of Australia’s most prominent and successful Ceramic Artists, National Living Treasure and Master of Australian Crafts. (2009) 45 years as a full-time professional ceramic artist with 96 solo exhibitions in Australia and internationally. Participant in many Group and Touring exhibitions.
Widely represented in permanent public collections throughout Australia and internationally.

Shaun de Bruyn is the Chief Executive Officer of South Australia’s peak industry body, Tourism Industry Council SA (TiCSA). He is a dedicated industry advocate with over 20 years of experience in delivering positive outcomes across leisure, tourism, and travel, unlocking the full economic potential of the visitor economy within South Australia.
Shaun’s background is wide and varied, having worked in areas of relationship management, business planning, destination and experience development, marketing and distribution, government engagement and strategic management.
Chris Sharpley is a Chartered Accountant who has provided tax and business consulting services to many of South Australia's most successful businesses and individuals for over 35 years. He was a partner of Ernst & Young (and predecessor Firms) for over 26 years.
He was the Managing Partner of EY in SA prior to his retirement from the partnership in 2015.
In addition to continuing to provide business consulting services to a number of SA businesses, Chris is currently on the Board of a number of Not For Profit and Charitable Organisations. This includes being the Chair of The Mary Potter Foundation.
Ali Field is a Partner at HWLE Lawyers, where she specialises in environment, planning, resources, and project approvals law. Her career spans both public and private sectors, including nearly 20 years at the State Crown Solicitor’s Office before moving into private practice in 2020. She has a deep understanding of SA government, legislation and administrative processes and brings a strategic and outcome focussed approach to governance and operation within a government context. Ali has been a committee member of both the Property Council of SA and the Urban Development Institute of South Australia. Ali’s interest in Carrick Hill is also deeply personal. Inspired by her mother’s lifelong love of stately homes and gardens, and their tours of many of England’s grand estates together, Ali has a genuine appreciation for Carrick Hill’s heritage - and the importance of contributing to its future.
Originally a specialist French teacher, Joanna now works in advocacy. Driven by climate change, she is determined to get the best possible results in built and natural heritage for current and future generations. In recent years she has led the community campaign to save the Waite Gatehouse from demolition and currently works with the Conservation Council advocating for improvements to our tree laws. Joanna is a Council Member on Mitcham Council.
Susie is an accomplished garden designer and co-founder of the Adelaide Hills based winery, Bird in Hand. With a background in marketing and tourism, she completed her Diploma of Landscape Design in 2014 and has been a driving force to the winery’s marketing and events for the last 25 years. Susie’s influence throughout the winery includes the new terraced gardens that have become central to the Cellar Door experience. In her design work, Susie’s uses a fusion of Mediterranean plants, flowering perennials, and ornamental grasses. Passionate about ecology, she has embarked on projects to enhance birdlife and increase biodiversity. Susie has previously been a member of the Adelaide Hills Wine Region Board and was recently appointed to the Botanic Gardens Foundation Board.
